JUNKANOO BEACH GUIDE

Named after the annual cultural festival held in New Providence this popular beach strip lies minutes from downtown Nassau making it an easy walk for Cruise ship passengers. While it is not noted on Google maps, Junkanoo Beach is actually a part of three quarters of a mile strip made up of three beach spots. The area noted as the "Western Esplanade Beach" is actually what is now known as Junkanoo Beach. Just west of that, you will find Long Wharf beach and the actual Western Esplanade Beach which ends where popular eating spot The Fish Fry begins. Ideally this beach works great if you are a cruise passenger and just want to get a quick dip while your ship is docked.

Of the three beaches Junkanoo beach is the smallest but offers a wider sand beaching area. The nearby Long wharf is a good spot to hop to if you do not want to be bothered with crowds. It has a lot of rocky areas but finding a comfortable spot to lay is not something you will find impossible. Western Esplanade beach is the bigger of the two, being longer in expanse but is not necessarily abundant in area because of its more narrow beach space.. It does not get as crowded as say Junkanoo beach usually

Cleanliness
These beaches as stated are popular and frequented by visitors and locals alike. There are a few receptacles here and there but given the human element you may see some litter in places. These are not dirty beaches by any stretch of the imagination and the vendors can often be seen cleaning trash that was left behind.

Surf
The beaches lie parallel to Paradise Island, Arawak Cay  and Crystal Cay. These islets serve as a point break for any approaching big waves. The water is either usually still or with very little surf.

Seclusion:
All of the beaches are usually very crowded especially on cruise ship days and Bahamian holidays. If you are one of those persons that appreciate a little less than throngs of beach goers then this is not the beach for you. It is popular beach among locals and because of its proximity to Nassau harbor it is heavily frequented by cruise ship passengers.

Unique Feature:

Junkanoo beach has actual vending stalls and is the only beach on Nassau where you can get right out of the ocean  and try some tasty native delights while enjoying some local or imported brew.  Junkanoo beach unlike a lot of other beaches has Bathroom stalls with showers. This is one of its major advantages and if safety is your concern it is literally right across the street from a Police station. There is not much in the way of criminal activity that goes on and safety should be resigned to paying attention to water depth if you intend on diving.

*ADVISORY*
Please use the same common sense that you would at home here and any other country you visit. When going to any beach it is wise to not carry valuables and only enough money that you will need.
